Damage Prevention Specialist - Locator

Job Description:

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED - THIS POSITION IS AN ON-CALL POSITION - SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST LIVE WITHIN AN 10 MILE RADIUS OF THE HWY 49/HWY 412 INTERSECTION

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:  This position has been deemed a Safety Sensitive position and any person performing duties in this position while under the influence of marijuana or any other substance (legal or illegal) that could impair the employee may constitute a threat to health and safety.  PMU maintains a zero-tolerance for the use of any substance that may impair a Safety Sensitive individual.  Consequences of a violation can be found in the PMU Drug and Alcohol Policy Manual.

SUMMARY: Receives Utility Locate Requests from Arkansas One Call and PMU Employees then reverence maps on a computer to identify utility and then attach locate machine and mark the location of PMU underground utilities in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Acts as the PMU contact person with Arkansas One-Call and other utility locaters

Operates different electronic detection equipment, to locate and mark underground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits.

Acts as PMU contact person with other utility companies on cut lines.

Takes pictures and stores them for each utility locate.

Prepares or updates maps to make corrections for specific plats on iPad.

Performs light excavation with a shovel to expose buried utilities when necessary.

Uses iPad or other devises to receive, document and close out excavation notices, both during normal hours and after hours.

Conducts research or analyzes data regarding excavation locations, construction prints, utility maps/prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities and to determine actual running line of requested utilities.

Completes daily log to document work completed using computerized data entry

Organizes daily locate assignments into a route designed to minimize backtracking and increase efficiency in covering the PMU service area.

Operates company vehicle in a safe manner and maintains professional appearance.

Aids Damage Prevention Supervisor in developing annual budget

Ability to use safe work practices to protect yourself and your team

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two - four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, and prints.  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret wire and construction plans.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must be able to read and understand maps and charts. General knowledge on emailing, using calendars, reports, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and must have the ability to input data and retrieve information using a terminal, PC, IPad or other keyboard devices. Using electronic locating devices is desirable.  Must possess good time management skills and work well with the public.  Must be able to work alone and be self-motivated.

Valid Driver’s License

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools; reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally; bending at the waist; standing and/or walking for extended periods of time; and hearing and speaking to exchange information.

The employee must be able to carry 3-5 lb. electronic locating equipment for extended periods of time and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. or lifting in excess of 50 lbs. with tool aids.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and the ability to distinguish between colors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works in a variety of hazardous environments such as construction sites and traffic right-of-way and is frequently exposed to the risk of electrical shock while performing locate assignments.  The employee must have the ability to work in confined spaces (the employee is required to have an attendant for all determined confined spaces and must follow the PMU safety procedures regarding such spaces).  The employee should be able to perform well in groups or alone.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
