Fiber Service Technician, Level 1

Job Description:

THIS POSITION IS AN ON-CALL POSITION - SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST LIVE WITHIN AN 10 MILE RADIUS OF THE HWY 49/HWY 412 INTERSECTION

SCHEDULE:

Tuesday-Friday:  10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Saturday:  7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - eligible for 15% premium pay

Sunday & Monday:  Off

STARTING PAY (NO EXPERIENCE): $16.00/HOUR

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:  This position has been deemed a Safety Sensitive position and any person performing duties in this position while under the influence of marijuana or any other substance (legal or illegal) that could impair the employee may constitute a threat to health and safety.  PLWC maintains a zero-tolerance for the use of any substance that may impair a Safety Sensitive individual.  Consequences of a violation can be found in the PLWC Drug and Alcohol Policy Manual.

SUMMARY: This is an entry level position in which the employee will be learning and assisting a Level 2 Fiber Service Technician in installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining fiber optic service to residential and business customers. 

An employee at this level is responsible for working in various roles including but not limited to, pulling fiber in existing underground conduit, running overhead fiber from utility poles, installing fiber in attic and crawl spaces, wall fishing fiber in various settings, reading spreadsheets, attaching equipment on the exterior and interior of residential and business buildings, and interacting with customers in a professional manner.  A level 1 service technician may also work by themselves or with other level 1 technicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Employees at Level 1 may perform portions of the work of higher classified positions occasionally, as assigned.  Other duties may be assigned.

Installation

Employee will learn to read a cut sheet to determine location of fiber taps, poles, splitter port number, and other pertinent information.

Employee will assist in performing a site survey at each customer premise to locate optimum location of fiber related equipment.  This includes assessing premium locations for wireless and other customer premise equipment.

Employee will assist in installing fiber drop from optical tap port into house box on side of house or business in a neat and professional manner.  This may demand climbing and working aloft on poles, ladders, or other support structures.

Employee will assist in installing a fiber house drop from house box on side of house or business either through attic, crawl space, or through wall into a wall plate inside of customer premise.

Employee performs wall fish of fiber and ethernet cabling and installation of wall plate(s) inside residence in a professional manner.

Employee installs ONT, IPTV Set Top Boxes, and other related equipment.

Employee will assist in fiber splicing and using fiber related equipment.

Troubleshooting

Employee will assist in troubleshooting fiber and equipment related issue with available tools and resources.

Must be available to work flexible hours, including time during natural disasters, company or department emergencies, or other shift change requirements as specified by management.

Must be available to work on-call duty after required training period.

Maintenance

Maintain all fiber related tools and equipment performing various tasks including cleaning, adjusting, repairing, and reporting problems when appropriate.

This employee will assist in keeping vehicle properly stocked with supplies and equipment necessary to perform daily duties in a neat and organized manner.

Maintenance

Maintain company-issued vehicle in good operating order including maintaining fuel in the fuel tanks; check tires, brakes, lights, horn, hydraulic system; and maintain cleanliness and neatness to provide overall safety.  Complete weekly vehicle checklist on assigned vehicle.  Report any mechanical problems requiring maintenance or repair as soon as possible

Education

Employee must complete the NCTI FTTx Basics course within 12 months.

Education

Employee must complete the NCTI Customer Service for Technicians course within 6 months.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one-year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of experience and education.  Experience with basic electronics and fiber optic systems at the customer premise level. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Driver's License; must complete NCTI Cable Installer course within one (1) year of hire date.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Knowledge of basic electronic theory; Ability to climb utility poles using extension ladders or pole climbers, after appropriate/required training.
