Electrical Engineer

Job Description:

BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING REQUIRED

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:  This position has been deemed a Safety Sensitive position and any person performing duties in this position while under the influence of marijuana or any other substance (legal or illegal) that could impair the employee may constitute a threat to health and safety.  PMU maintains a zero-tolerance for the use of any substance that may impair a Safety Sensitive individual.  Consequences of a violation can be found in the PMU Drug and Alcohol Policy Manual.

SUMMARY:  As the Utility’s engineering field representative, under direction of the Engineering Department Manager, performs design, staking and coordination of all phases of line construction, extensions, and changes in the utility’s distribution & transmission system in accordance with approved engineering practices and established policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Follow the National Electric Safety Code.

Designs electrical facilities (including overhead and underground services) to serve existing and future customers.

Provides drawings and materials lists for overhead and underground distribution and transmission projects.

Works closely with Electric Department to ensure construction of electrical facilities is done to design specification.

Provides engineering support to the PMU Electric, Fiber, and Service Departments, including staking and layout of electric lines.

Develop project cost estimates for internal and external customers and for PMU budgetary purposes.

Organizes and dispatches electrical crews during major outages, including SCADA operations.

Assists in electric system studies and work plans, as needed.

Assists in maintaining inventory of key electrical materials and equipment.

Help maintain an accurate GIS Electric System Map.

Expected to have the ability to gain a high level of knowledge of PMU’s electric SCADA system, substations, 69 kV transmission system, and distribution system.

Communicates with customers, consultants, contractors, and developers that require electric service from PMU.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, CONTINUED

Plans preventative maintenance projects for upkeep of existing electric system.

Assists other crews such as service and line crews when needed.

Will take proper care of the company vehicle assigned to them and keep in good condition.

Will be subject to 24-hour emergency call-out as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) in Electrical (preferred) or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university; and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must be capable of designing overhead and underground electrical facilities.  Familiarity with electric line construction equipment and materials (both overhead and underground).  Knowledge of substations and capability of learning switching procedures a must.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Must be knowledgeable in Microsoft Office Applications, ESRI-GIS, and AutoCAD.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid State of Arkansas Driver’s License. Must have or be able to obtain a Professional Engineers License within 4 years.
