Job Description:
FOR EXPERIENCED MECHANICS ONLY
SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION: This position has been deemed a Safety Sensitive position and any person performing duties in this position while under the influence of marijuana or any other substance (legal or illegal) that could impair the employee may constitute a threat to health and safety. PLWC maintains a zero-tolerance for the use of any substance that may impair a Safety Sensitive individual. Consequences of a violation can be found in the PLWC Drug and Alcohol Policy Manual.
SUMMARY: Performs major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of utility equipment and vehicles and keeps proper records of repairs made.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Assists employees with their maintenance needs by providing good internal customer service.
Evaluates mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment.
Helps evaluate mechanical problems and inspects repairs completed.
Rebuilds, replaces, or repairs major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc.
Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems and installs vehicle accessories.
Does metal work including welding, cutting, and fabricating.
Estimates time and materials required to perform major repairs.
Analyzes engine performance and performs tune-ups as needed.
Performs routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
Maintains accurate, updated preventive maintenance records.
Operates tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
Follows established safety inspection protocol and schedule.
Ensures shop, equipment, and tools are clean and in safe operating condition.
Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
Maintains accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
Goes out on service calls, as necessary.
Other duties may be assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Mechanics are required to provide their own set of tools to perform the required duties.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Advanced knowledge of fuel engine maintenance and repair. Knowledge of diesel engines preferred. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical problems and perform repairs independently. Ability to work on and have experience with heavy equipment mechanical repairs. Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair. Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts. Knowledge of basic hydraulics and fabrication experience necessary.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or minimum 5 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of experience and education. ASE Master Certified preferred at time of employment but must be completed within first 18 months of employment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret wiring and parts diagrams.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Driver’s license; obtain Commercial Driver’s License within one (1) year from date of eligibility within the company.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
