WWTP Maintenance Operator

Job Description:

THIS POSITION IS AN ON-CALL POSITION - SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST LIVE WITHIN A 10- MILE RADIUS OF THE HWY 49/HWY 412 INTERSECTION

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:  This position has been deemed a Safety Sensitive position and any person performing duties in this position while under the influence of marijuana or any other substance (legal or illegal) that could impair the employee may constitute a threat to health and safety.  PMU maintains a zero-tolerance for the use of any substance that may impair a Safety Sensitive individual.  Consequences of a violation can be found in the PMU Drug and Alcohol Policy Manual.

SUMMARY:  Assists with the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, buildings, and grounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Performs mechanical maintenance duties such as replacing worn or broken parts, rebuilding pumps and motors, replacing pipes and valves, cleaning process tanks, and making periodic electrical repairs.

Perform routine mechanical maintenance duties on equipment including greasing and changing oil as needed.

Performs two daily rounds on processes and equipment, and records information on the Daily Round Check Sheet.

Operates alkaline stabilized sludge process and produces a class ADEQ biosolid.  Must monitor temperatures, gauges, and various steps throughout the process to ensure the biosolids meet Federal EPA requirements.

Conduct checks, maintenance, and cleaning of the UV disinfection system.

Takes weekly on-call in rotation with the other operators, and when on-call, performs rounds at the WWTP once on Saturday and once on Sunday.

Maintains all WWTP out buildings in clean and proper order.

Delivers and spreads biosolids to customers via spreader and dump trucks as needed.

Wash clarifiers, weirs, and launder covers as needed.

Other duties may be assigned and are hereby incorporated.

Serves as an alternate sampler for collecting WWTP and industrial samples as needed.

Maintains lawns, lagoon levees, and fence around property and the grounds around all structures (may include the use of lawn mowers, bush hog and weed eater) as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six month to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, parts/wiring diagrams, schematics, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before small groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, area, circumference, volume, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 1 year. Must hold or obtain a Class III Wastewater Operator License within a reasonable amount of time. Must obtain the PMU Industrial Arc Flash certification within the first year of employment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be familiar with 3-phase electrical power and water pumps. Must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair common electrical issues (with wiring, motors, starters, overloads, relays, breakers, fuses, etc.) Knowledge of keyboard, computer, and calculator.  Must be able to read a voltage meter and know how to change the packing and mechanical seals in pumps. Must be able to perform basic functions in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, grasp or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear.  Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.  The employee is occasionally required to push, pull climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move heavier loads. Employees lifting and/or moving loads over 45 pounds will be required to use the team lift approach unless an appropriate engineering control is available.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and depth perception.

Hepatitis A and B vaccines are provided by PMU.  While not mandatory, the vaccination series is highly recommended for PMU personnel working in environments with a potential of exposure.  Employees electing to decline the Hepatitis vaccines will be required to sign a declination form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and with explosives and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and possible risk of radiation.  The employee occasionally exposed to vibrations and occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection is required in some restricted areas that have high noise levels.
